This session will bring together researchers who employ algorithm auditing methods in their work, which can expose how the reality of AI systems deviates from the planned or expected. By working across disciplines, these researchers conduct inquiries into computational systems that can examine a range of impacts on society.
Nel Escher and Ashley McDermott use ethnography-informed algorithmic auditing to describe how YouTube contributes to language shift in children.
Emma Lurie and Danaé Metaxa conduct civil rights-focused audits of AI systems.
Each team will present for 30 minutes, then take 15 minutes of Q&A. The final 30 minutes will transition to a panel discussion about the potential for AI auditing to serve as a mechanism for transparency and accountability.
